IN MEMORIAM OF BOHDAN HAWRYLYSHYN
On October 24, 2016, at 5 am, at the age of 90, Dr. Bohdan Hawrylyshyn – a prominent Ukrainian, Canadian and Swiss economist, professor, benefactor and a public figure died peacefully in his sleep.
Bohdan Hawrylyshyn spent the last moments of his life surrounded by his family at his apartment in Kyiv, in his beloved Ukraine.
Bohdan Hawrylysyn was born on October 19, 1926 in his native village Koropets, Ternopil, Ukraine. He received an MA in engineering from the University of Toronto, an MBA from IMI-Geneva, his doctorate in Economics and Social Sciences from the University of Geneva. He served as Director of the International Management Institute (now IMD) for eighteen years. Dr Hawrylyshyn was a member of the Club of Rome, the World Academy of Arts and Science, Ithe International Management Academy, and received Honorary Doctorates from 7 Universities in Canada and Ukraine. He acted as a consultant to governments of various states and international companies, moderator and chairman of numerous international conferences and seminars in more than 89 countries.
Founder of the International Center of Policy Studies (Kyiv), the International Management Institute in New Delhi and later IMI-Kyiv. Co-founder of the European Forum on Management in Davos (now World Economic Forum). He acted as consultant to General Electric, IBM, Unilever, Phillips and advisor to several countries.
He was advisor to the first President of Ukraine, four Chairmen of Parliament and three prime ministers of Ukraine; founder and Chairman of the Advisory Council to the Presidium of Ukrainian Parliament (Verkhovna Rada); he founded several youth organizations in Ukraine and was an active member of the Ukrainian National Scout Organization PLAST. President of the Bohdan Hawrylyshyn charitable Foundation in Kyiv and Fondation Vidrodgenia in Geneva. Author of books: “Towards More Effective Societies: Road Maps to the Future” (1980), “Identity in a Globalized World” (2011).
On his 90th birthday, Dr Hawrylyshyn was awarded the “Medal of Freedom” for significant contribution to the development of Ukraine by the President of Ukraine and the Medal of St. Nicholas by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv
Patriarchate.
Eternal and bright memories of Bohdan Hawrylyshyn will remain forever in the hearts of all those who knew him. May his work towards building a free, democratic and benevolent Ukraine continue.
